Sewing Machine 101
Maybe you are new to sewing; maybe you have a brand-spanking-new machine; maybe
you haven’t sewn in many years. It’s always good to have a refresher about your
machine and how it works! Join Jane for this three-hour class in which we will go over
the basics: vocabulary, presser feet, threading, bobbin winding, things you must do, and
things you should definitely not do. We will explore the stitches on your machine and
you will create a stitch guide individualized for your machine.
Skill Level: Beginner
Class Requirements:
? Sewing machine that is in working order
o With all of the parts and pieces it came with (super important): pedal,
power cord, extra presser feet, extra bobbins, needles, and any other
known or mysterious items
o Sewing machine manual (also super important). If your manual is online,
please download it before the class. Feel free to bring an iPad, tablet, or
computer so it’s easier to see than on your phone.
? A fat quarter (approximately 18” x 22”) of a plain or mostly plain fabric*, a light
color is best. We want stitches to show on it, so it should be one color without
patterns.
? Two colors of thread* (try a couple of spools of Aurifil* if you need to pick some
up) that contrast with your fabric. They should both be colors that will show up
on your fabric. The only color that I do NOT suggest is black.
? Micron pen*- this should also contrast with your fabric.
? Pencil or pen for taking notes
? Scissors* for snipping threads and possibly cutting fabric
? Seam ripper* (just in case!)
? A list of questions you might have, or things you need/wish to know.
